The East Tour is a full-day journey through Madeira’s most iconic eastern landscapes, combining dramatic mountain views, lush forests, and traditional villages. This experience is ideal for visitors who want to discover the island’s natural diversity and cultural heritage in a single, unforgettable day.
The tour usually begins with hotel pick-up in the Funchal area, followed by a scenic drive through the mountains. One of the first major highlights is Pico do Arieiro, the island’s third-highest peak at 1,818 meters. Here, visitors are treated to breathtaking panoramic views above the clouds, with rugged peaks and deep valleys stretching across the horizon.
Descending from the mountains, the tour continues through the peaceful natural park of Ribeiro Frio. This area is known for its rich Laurissilva forest, a UNESCO-listed ecosystem unique to Madeira. Guests often have the opportunity to take a short walk along a levada (traditional irrigation channel), surrounded by lush greenery and tranquil scenery.
The journey then heads through the north coast to visit the charming village of Santana, famous for its traditional triangular houses with thatched roofs. These colorful structures are one of Madeira’s most recognizable cultural symbols and offer a glimpse into the island’s rural past. This stop often includes time for lunch and exploration.
Continuing eastward, the tour passes through scenic coastal roads and dramatic landscapes until reaching Ponta de São Lourenço. This unique peninsula contrasts sharply with the rest of the island, featuring arid terrain, volcanic rock formations, and sweeping ocean views. It is one of the best places to appreciate Madeira’s raw geological beauty.
On the return journey, the route may include stops at viewpoints such as Portela Viewpoint, offering stunning perspectives over the island’s northeastern coastline and lush valleys.
Throughout the tour, knowledgeable guides share insights into Madeira’s history, traditions, and natural environment, making the experience both educational and engaging.
