The West Tour is a full-day sightseeing experience that takes you through some of the most breathtaking landscapes on the island of Madeira. Designed for travelers who want to explore the island’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and dramatic coastline in one day, this tour offers a perfect combination of scenic viewpoints, charming villages, and unique geological formations.
The journey typically begins with a convenient hotel pick-up in the Funchal area, followed by a scenic drive towards the picturesque fishing village of Câmara de Lobos. This traditional village, once painted by Winston Churchill, offers an authentic glimpse into Madeira’s maritime culture and colorful local life.
From there, the tour continues to one of Madeira’s most iconic landmarks: Cabo Girão. Standing at approximately 580 meters above sea level, it is one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, featuring a glass skywalk that provides spectacular panoramic views over the Atlantic Ocean and the island’s terraced farmland below.
The route then heads inland and northward, passing through lush valleys and mountain roads, often crossing the impressive Encumeada pass. Along the way, guests can admire dramatic landscapes, deep ravines, and ever-changing scenery that highlight Madeira’s volcanic origins.
One of the highlights of the West Tour is the visit to Porto Moniz, famous for its natural volcanic swimming pools. Here, travelers usually have time to enjoy lunch and, weather permitting, take a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear seawater pools formed by ancient lava flows.
As the tour continues along the rugged northern coastline, visitors can witness waterfalls cascading down cliffs and stop at scenic viewpoints such as Seixal, known for its striking black sand beach and lush surroundings. The journey also includes a stop in São Vicente, a charming village with traditional architecture and historical significance.
On the return journey to Funchal, the tour crosses the Paul da Serra plateau, the largest and highest plateau on the island. This unique landscape offers wide-open views, contrasting sharply with the steep valleys and coastal cliffs seen earlier in the day.
Throughout the experience, knowledgeable local guides provide insights into Madeira’s history, culture, and natural environment, making the tour both informative and engaging.
